Carbon steel wire is listed by the American Society (AWS) under the designation "ER 70 S - x" (British system of measures), where: "E" is the electrode; "R" - filler; 70 is the minimum tensile strength, expressed in thousands of pounds per square inch (psi); "S" - hardness; "X" is a digit,representing information about the chemical composition of the electrode ("2", "3", "4", "6" or "7"), it corresponds to a variable amount of carbon, manganese and silicon in addition to a fixed mass of phosphorus, sulfur, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, copper and other elements.
