LG G7 One and G7 Fit - pros and cons

In October and November 2018, LG presented two new products to the public at once - the G7 Fit and G7 One. Opinions about the devices were so controversial that, if all the rumors are to be believed, it could be confusing. In this article, we will learn more about each smartphone, get closer to the truth and draw conclusions.

How it all began

Since 2000, LG Electronics has opened the production of phones with color screens, and has achieved great success in this during the existence of the brand. LG pioneered this in 2011 with a 3D display phone. It was LG Optimus 3D, and you didn't need glasses to use it.

The year 2010 also became a landmark for the company - the Optimus One P 500 model then took the first lines in world sales ratings, crossing the 60 millionth threshold in gadget sales.

In 2012, the brand surprised everyone again when, in collaboration with Prada, the hit Prada 3.0 conquered the world.
All phones came with Android on board.

Of course, LG is famous not only for mobile phones. Their home appliances, televisions, sound systems, vacuum cleaners, washing machines, and much more, have helped to gain many fans of the brand around the world.

In this article, let's take a closer look at the new "residents" of the company's lineup, namely the G7 Fit and One, consider the advantages, disadvantages, appearance and other features of the technical component of the products.

What will please the LG G7 One and Fit

For everyone who is going to purchase the flagship One, the company guarantees that within the first two years from the date of purchase, the owner of the device will not be left without support, and will receive all application and firmware updates of the Android operating system the very first.

Fit is an even more simplified version of the flagship phone in almost identical design. The only thing is that it comes with Snapdragon 821, which means that the price of the phone will be as affordable as possible. By releasing this phone, the company wants to erase the line between flagship and mid-range devices as much as possible, adding here a slightly old, but flagship processor, and even a stylish design.

But in Fit, unlike the One, the proprietary LG shell remained. Like it or not, everyone decides for himself, but the company is developing it more and more, and now it causes less negative emotions than before.

Fit also has proprietary software installed in the camera application, so the built-in artificial intelligence will help you take clearer pictures. Below is a little more detail about the main features of smartphones.

Display

Both models have an impressive screen. And it's not about color rendering at all, there is nothing unique in this regard. The picture is very good, pleasant, but there is nothing supernatural in it, and taking into account the cost of the gadgets of this brand, this is the norm, and you should not settle for less.

The display on both devices is large, with a diagonal of 6.1 inches. It is made using a high-tech energy efficient IPS matrix. It is thanks to this technology that the screen gives out a deep black color, supports the Always on Display function, has a good margin of brightness, and it is distinguished from AMOLED only by more natural color shades.

Despite the large size, both smartphones will be comfortable to hold in the hand. The backlight comes from the bottom of the display, not from the sides, as is the case with most competitive brands. It is due to this that the same energy efficiency is achieved, which was written above.

Cutout on the screen, aka "monobrow"

Since the devices have received high-quality IPS displays, there are no problems with hiding the "bangs" on the screen. If you hide it in the sub-items of the settings menu, then the top will simply be filled with black, and the borders of the cutout will not be visible.

A separate setting item is devoted to what pattern or pattern the corners around the cutout will be covered with - a very interesting and stylish solution. Many phone models have similar features, but in the G7 Fit and One, the cutout patterns are most interesting.

True, this feature will work only in gallery applications, voice recorder and making voice calls. The function does not work in other applications, but the developers will fix this error with the advent of updates.

Opening the desktop or other applications - do not hide the cutout. You have to come to terms with this. When running full-screen games, the bangs are neatly cropped, but only in black, not the pattern you choose. And even if in the settings you check the box that you want to leave the cutout in place, this will not affect the situation in any way.

Speaker and sound

Another feature of the G7 One and Fit is a multimedia external speaker. According to the manufacturer, a resonator is installed inside the smartphones, with a volume of seventeen times more than on previous models. Dubbed the Boom Box, it is designed to provide deep bass, sound reinforcement and other enhancements.

On tests, it turns out that this is just one good and loud speaker. But for flagships for that kind of money, the lack of stereo sound is a clear disadvantage. One could not pay attention to this feature, but LG actively praised Boom Box, calling it a "chip" of the devices, that now many will be disappointed when they hear it "in action".

No matter how LG marketers amplify their ads, one thing is clear - one speaker, even a premium one, is not capable of delivering surround sound.

For example, the same Asus Zen Phone 5z, where the manufacturers installed two speakers without any Boom Sound, and other delights of marketers. At the same time, Asus has a more pleasant sound.

If we compare LG with the same Samsung Galaxy s9, then there's nothing to say - Samsung is ahead. And all this is not to say that LG sounds bad, not at all. Only if you compare them with smartphones without stereo sound support.

As for listening to music with headphones, the sound is excellent. The manufacturer also pleased that he left a 3.5 mm jack in both models. to connect headphones. Well done in this, because in 2019 fewer and fewer mobile device manufacturers are leaving mini-jacks "untouched".

Many built-in modes to improve sound are opened from the notification curtain. There are special modes for adjusting the sound when watching movies on a smartphone. Among the existing models on the mobile device market, One and Fit are the first to take into account such a nuance for comfortable movie watching.

HI-FI mode makes the sound thinner and clearer. This function is interesting because, listening to clear sound in headphones without additional effects, and then turning on the hi-fi mode, it is surprising that the sound can become even clearer.

Cameras

After looking at the examples of photos, it becomes obvious that this is not at all the flagship level.

Sample photo on G7 One:

How Fit takes pictures:

After viewing, you can see not very good detail, the wrong white balance, and the clarity of the photos is not at a high level.

In appearance, the cameras modestly fit into the design of the phone and hardly protrude, which is a rarity in 2019. One of the modules is wide-angle, and this solution is much more interesting than those that are installed in almost every other flagship. The second module, which is positioned as a standard one, has a narrower viewing angle than, for example, MI 8, or One Plus 6 or the same HTC U 12 Plus.

Comparison of cameras G7 One and Fit:

In the Fit model, unlike the One, the manufacturer focuses on the fact that the camera application uses artificial intelligence.

But today this is far from an exclusive feature, and even here his work is not at the highest level. It seems that he is just randomly going through all the groups of words he knows - fruits, vegetables, animals, architecture, landscape. Even though these items are not in the smartphone frame.
One shoots videos at 2160p, Fit at 1080p.

Performance and operating system

The most upsetting thing is that on the G7 One, the developers have installed a processor that is far from new for 2019 - the 835 Qualcomm Snapdragon, and on the 7Fit - the generally "elderly" Snapdragon 821.

Why the manufacturers decided to do this remains a mystery. And if they are suitable for everyday tasks, then in games both One and Fit will have a hard time. In colorful "heavy" toys with smooth animation, both models produce animation that is far from smooth, and noticeably slow down.

In addition, calling the built-in chips cold is also a stretch - the metal frames on the edges of smartphones very quickly heat up to an unpleasant level. The measurements showed a temperature of 38.8 degrees Celsius.

Both devices support the simultaneous ability to use two SIM cards and increase the storage capacity using memory cards.

Branded shell

The fact that smartphones do not have enough power reserve, many blame the proprietary LG shell.

True, it was installed only in the Fit model, the One will have "pure" Android 9 Pie. The younger "brother" 7 Fit was less fortunate in this - the shell is overloaded with all sorts of fine settings and tweaks. On the one hand, customization is great, and completely corresponds to the ideology of Android, but LG programmers were completely puzzled.

The settings menu is divided into four tabs, and each of them has almost the same length as the standard Android menu. And each of the points hides in itself a scattering of sub-points. The shell also contains many programs, such as LG Assistant, Smart doctor, and others, which few people use, but because of which the smartphone begins to "choke".

Unlocking

Removing the lock using the owner's face in real life will not work right away. The unlock function does not work well, especially if the light source is behind the owner of the phone.

In the settings there is an opportunity to improve face recognition, but in fact, the program simply overwrites the current face, deleting the previous record.

The fingerprint scanner can also be used, it works well on two devices, and is conveniently located on the back of smartphones. It works quickly, except for touching with a wet palm - it is recommended to take the devices only with dry hands.

Autonomy

Under normal use, both models live on the same charge from morning to evening, no more. If the use of devices is in active mode, then for peace of mind it would be better to purchase a Power Bank so as not to be left without communication at an inopportune moment.

The One and Fit have the same battery capacity at 3000mAh.

Pros and cons

After a brief acquaintance with both devices, it becomes possible to highlight the main positive and negative sides.

Advantages:
  • Appearance;
  • The One G7 ships with Android 9;
  • Great sound in headphones;
  • Convenient fingerprint scanner;
  • 3.5 mm headphone jack.
Disadvantages:
  • No stereo sound;
  • Face unlock does not work well;
  • Photo quality;
  • Fit interface.

Output

It becomes clear why LG smartphones are losing in popularity to competitive brands. The brand is struggling to be better than Huawei and Samsung, but the final result leaves a lot to be desired.

Both phones can compete with the Mi 8 and OnePlus 6. They have noticeably good speakers, interesting sound settings and a headphone jack, along with water and dust resistance. But face unlocking works poorly, worse than those of competitors. The photo is not of high quality, the interface is overloaded with applications, most of which will not be needed by the end user.

Support for products from the manufacturer is worse than that of the same Xiaomi and One Plus, despite the fact that, unlike LG, they do not position themselves as an A-brand.

Smartphones came out far from bad, but not for the money they ask for.
